Mothers Day

I always connected Mothers Day with the first splash of lilac in bloom. In my childhood it was an unwritten law ( my father’s) don’t cut any branches off from our own lilac bush – so we went out searching in the neighborhood for lilacs hanging over fences, quite often we had a little get together because many of us kids did the same thing the night before Mother’s Day.

The best chance to find some was in the” Old Village” by the only farm around; where huge old lilac bushes grew openly and away from the house, but we better not getting caught; the owner was not very happy about our ritual and was more often than not-  ready for us, just as my father was ready just in case someone tried to get close to our gate.

Many times I ended up with some good old wildflower from the wayside, better than nothing, the idea to buy flowers never entered our minds and there was no flower shop in our village anyway. Good memories.
